Kimberley MacKenzieIt was one the very first fundraising conferences I had ever attended. I was volunteering at the bookstore. One of the perks of volunteering was that I was able to crash the occasional session. I’ll never forget walking into Ann Rosenfield’s session on fundraising ethics. Being new to the profession I didn’t even know what “fundraising ethics” was or why it mattered. The session was a random and rushed choice.

Ninety minutes later I can say without a doubt that my mind was officially blown! I already knew that fundraising was going to be a satisfying career, what I learned from Ann was how much of a responsibility we have to be good stewards of donor funds. I also learned that Ann Rosenfield was someone I could look up to. Sixteen years later I still do.

Ann’s Linked In profile documents that she has been working in the charitable sector for twenty-four years. (So instead of babysitting like the rest of us twelve year olds, Ann clearly jumped right in!) During that time Ann has served in many capacities, from major gifts in large shops, to executive director in small organizations. Anne is a teacher, mentor and cheerleader for many of us. I’m very happy to tell you that she is also now your new Editor for Charity eNEWS.

 Ann Rosenfield

As we work to pass the baton I had an opportunity to chat with Ann about her motivation and aspiration as your new editor. Here is what she had to say:

KM: What is it about Charity eNEWS that inspires you?

AR: Charity eNEWS is a big part of helping Canadians do good work better. Charity eNEWS is a great chance to learn from coast to coast to coast. Charity eNEWS gives all kinds of nonprofits and Canadian voices a way to share what's important.

KM: What kind of impact do you want to have as Editor?

AR: We are living in a really big moment. Canada will be a clear leadership contrast to the US and Britain. Charities have big opportunities to highlight the Canadian way of making communities better.

KM: Can you tell me about the most joyous or memorable moment in your career? How did your peers and colleagues contribute to that?

AR: Four years ago, Rainbow Railroad was a teeny, tiny group. Great donors, volunteers, Board, Board Chair, and Executive Director changed that. Today, we are a strong charity making a real difference in people's lives.

Without a doubt Ann will once again raise the bar for Charity eNEWS. Prepare yourself to be provoked, to think deeper, care more and be inspired to work harder together to make this sector even stronger.

I can’t imagine passing the torch to anyone else. Please join me in welcoming Ann Rosenfield as Editor of Charity eNEWS.

Yours for a more robust sector,

Kimberley MacKenzie
