My boss rightly notes that the world today divides into two groups of people. Those who have way too much work and those who don't have enough.

If you are lucky enough to have a job, you need to hire help. I am not just saying this for practical reasons. I am also saying it for personal ones. In the Jewish tradition, helping someone find a job or start a business is the highest form of giving. By giving someone work, you are giving them the chance to be self-supporting.

According to Stats Canada, the unemployment rate in Canada is 10.7% Some non-profit sector experts estimate that our sector's rate is twice that average. Like all other sectors, the people who are most likely to experience unemployment are women, immigrants, and people from racialized backgrounds.

Right now is the best time to give someone a contract. There are tonnes of great people out there who are suddenly out of work. A contract from you will not only help you manage your overwhelming workload better, you will be helping someone out financially when they need it most. You will also be giving someone another reference and more experience. You are getting help and also the chance to make a difference.

Can't afford a full-time person? What about hiring some consulting help? There are many people who are excellent established consultants or who are experienced professionals just starting their business who can provide you with useful help and support. Consulting work thrives on referrals so giving a contract will help you get your work done better as well as help a small business owner.

Many of the problems the world faces are big and complicated. By focusing on helping someone out of work through a contract or hiring them for consulting, you can make a real, important and lasting difference.
