As our news service organization moves into its fourth decade, I am delighted to announce that Lisa MacDonald, already very well known to our readers, returns this week as the Editor of Hilborn Charity eNEWS. Ann Rosenfield, whose extensive expertise and warm personality has so powerfully characterized our weekly messages for the last few years, will switch gears and work with Lisa as Contributing Editor with a mandate to maintain and expand our contact with the various professional organizations in our sector.
A Media Leader for Canada's Nonprofit sector
Thirty-one years ago this Fall, the stream of publications that currently manifests as Hilborn Charity eNEWS launched as The Canadian Professional Fundraiser, with John Brown as the founder/editor. Within only a few months, facing a terminal heath diagnosis, John turned the newsletter over to me. We changed the name to Canadian FundRaiser and re-launched in September 1991, publishing nine times per year with me in the editor’s chair and Pat Porth contributing. Pat soon took over all of the editorial duties and led the way for many years until, she too was forced to step down for health reasons.
Along the way, we had evolved from print to online, and from nine times annually to monthly, and then twice monthly. We changed our newsletter name to Canadian Fundraising & Philanthropy and recruited Editor Janet Gadeski, who had been contributing powerfully-researched articles regularly for several years.
In 2010, Lisa first joined the Hilborn team, as we found ourselves carefully navigating the evolving challenges of reporting on the fast-changing Canadian nonprofit sector. We switched to a weekly frequency and renamed ourselves once again; this time to Hilborn Charity eNEWS!
After many years at the Editorial helm, Janet retired and handed over the baton to Kimberly Mackenzie, who shepherded us through 2017-19 in fine style. Lisa changed course to write a book, and my long-time friend and occasional partner George Stanois convinced Ann to bring her decades of front-line fundraising experience to bear on the Editor’s assignment, which she has done with outstanding success until this week.
Aside from her previous company role as Editorial Director, Lisa's Hilborn résumé includes AFP eWire Canada, and Gift Planning in Canada. As the in-house book editor for Civil Sector Press, Lisa has edited many nonprofit sector titles, including the best seller, Excellence in Fundraising in Canada (Volumes 1 & 2). She invites your input on how Charity eNEWS can best serve you - our charity leaders. Contact her with topic ideas and/or article submissions at lisa@hilborn.com.
Welcome back, Lisa, and thank you Ann, for bringing us, intact and strong through COVID, to this next plateau.
Jim Hilborn is the Publisher of Hilborn Charity eNEWS.
