When you fall out of love with your job, the central question that plagues you is usually– should I quit my job? Regardless of whether you’ve been dreading Mondays because you’re bored, or feeling absolutely overwhelmed, this question can take over your mind.
The problem with this question though, is that it’s too big. There rarely exists a simple answer. So how do you decide: should you stay or should you go?
In order to move your thinking process forward, I recommend tackling a smaller, more specific question that can help you get clear on your next step. My suggestion is to ask yourself:
What’s holding me back from making a change?
Here are some potential obstacles:
• Perhaps you do not know what you would prefer to do instead of your job
• Maybe you don’t have any savings to draw from as you look for a new job
• Perhaps you’re unclear about whether or not your current qualifications are enough to apply to a job in a different industry
Do any of these obstacles ring true for you? If they do, that’s great news! These are issues you can tackle. You can do some research or start a freedom savings fund. The path becomes much clearer when you focus on the question of what’s holding you back.
So, the next time you’re obsessing over a big life question such as the possibility of quitting your job, try to change the script and ask yourself a question that will help you narrow down your thoughts and forge a plan.
