This is not an expert article about the Black experience in Canada. This is an exploration of recent resources I have found personally useful in learning more.

Collecting Courage: Joy, Pain, Freedom, Love

Edited by Nneka Allen, Camila Vital Nunes Pereira and Nicole Salmon, and written by a group of North America’s top Black fundraisers, Collecting Courage: Joy, Pain, Freedom, Love is an anthology about racism in the philanthropic sector. Detailing their experiences of systemic racism to outright hostility in toxic workplaces, the contributors’ testimonies chip away at the idea of inherent goodness in the charitable sector, yet also manages to inspire joy and hope.

Unfunded: Black Communities Overlooked by Canadian Philanthropy

Research suggests the Canadian philanthropic sector has failed to support the urgent and specific needs of Black communities in Canada, according to Unfunded: Black Communities Overlooked by Canadian Philanthropy, a report released recently. Experts across the country see the Foundation for Black Communities (FBC), a first-of-its-kind philanthropic foundation, led by and for Black people, with a focus on investing in and supporting Black communities as a unique opportunity to address this critical gap in Canada's philanthropic sector.
